UBUNTU CAPE TOWN: PRIORITY IS SURVIVAL IN THE NFD

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

Chokoe’s TTM have two notable scalps under their belt.

Ubuntu Cape Town FC coach Roger Links was happy to get away with a point following their 1-1 draw away to Real Kings on Saturday and urged his team to start winning their home games to ensure they maintain their National First Division status at the end of the season.

“We are a new team and our main priority is to maintain our status,” said Links after the match at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont, outside Durban.

Surprise Bhengu opened the scoring a minute before half-time but Range Chivaviro cancelled it out in the 65th minute, earning his side a valuable point.

“I am proud of my team. They showed a lot of character. We had to have guts to get something out from this game. Kings are on a good run and I am happy with the point,” said Links.

The 53-year-old mentor said his first mission was to ensure the team settled in well and now feels it is time for them to start imposing themselves on the other teams.

“It is our second point away from home and now we need to improve our game a little bit at home. A win will help us settle. I have told players we need to be ambitious and build ourselves up to hopefully challenge for promotion,” added the former Cape Town Spurs player.

Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila continued their giant-killing act, beating Highlands Park 2-1, a result which follows last weekend’s win over Jomo Cosmos. The win took Sello Chokoe’s team to 10th on the standings with six points after four matches.

A second-half Ian Chikohwa brace handed University of Pretoria their second win of the season as they beat a hapless Royal Eagles 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, leading to the sacking of Allan Freese.

Eagles took an early lead when Boikanyo Komane scored from the penalty spot. But AmaTuks staged a late comeback as Chikohwa equalised with just over five minutes from the final whistle, and scored again a few minutes later.

Freese was released by Eagles on Sunday and Phakaaathi has since learnt that club owner Sbu Mpisane is looking at bringing in either Dan Malesela or Vladislav Heric as his replacement.
