WAFA WAFA: MIDFIELDER HOPES TO FINALLY GET A TASTE OF THE ACTION

Cape Town City and SuperSport vie for season’s first title.

Last season SuperSport United youngster Teboho Mokoena was kicking his feet on the bench while his team-mates were busy on the field during the Telkom Knockout (TKO) and the Nedbank Cup finals.

The young midfielder witnessed his team-mates lose the TKO to Cape Town City and later in the season he went on to celebrate with his team after they beat Orlando Pirates to lift the Ke Yona trophy, though once again he was a substitute.

Now Mokoena and his SuperSport team-mates have again reached a final and will face Cape Town City again, in the 2017 MTN8 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban this evening.

“I’m very excited to have reached my third final with the team,” said Mokoena. “It shows that our hard work is paying off and we are determined to go all the way and lift the cup. I was on the bench during the Telkom and Nedbank Cup finals, I just hope this time around it will be different and I will get a chance to play.”

Mokoena was instrumental in the club’s Wafa Wafa journey this season, particularly in the semifinals against Maritzburg United, playing the whole 90 minutes in both legs and getting an assist in one of Jeremy Brockie’s goals in the second leg.

Looking at his role over the two legs, the 20-year-old seems to have quite a good chance to start the final. But he says it will all depends on coach Eric Tinkler’s plans for the game.

“It will be great to start the match, I feel very good about myself because I have been working hard at training. We are all motivated and everyone has been raising their hands for selection. So, at the end of the day, it will all depend on how the coach wants to approach the game,” he added.

“But again, it doesn’t matter who starts, we just have to support each other to ensure that we win the match.”

Coming up against City, Mokoena could face a daunting task in midfield against City’s Thabo Nodada, who has also been impressive this season. The United midfielder, however, is not afraid of the competition. He says he respects every player, but when it is time for him to do his job on the field, he doesn’t really concern himself with who he will be up against.

Kick-off: 7pm.
