Tasty clash in ‘Beck’ Stakes

THRILLER: BROADWAY TRIP AND FLYING FREE COULD MEET AGAIN IN GRADE 3 RACE

- Jack Milner

Yvette Bremner enters two fillies in Starling Stakes.

We could see a replay of last Saturday’s race in which Broadway Trip got up on the post to touch off Flying Free when the runners line up for the Grade 3 Graham Beck Stakes over 1400m at Turffontein on Saturday 4 November.

Broadway Trip, trained by Alec Laird, was narrowly able to retain his unbeaten record when he got up in the dying stride to thwart Gavin van Zyl-trained Flying Free.

The Graham Beck Stakes, along with the Grade 3 Starling Stakes for three-year-old fillies, will be run on the same day as the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile. The two races are seen as the main warm-up races for the respective Grade 2 Investec Dingaans and the Grade 3 Fillies Mile, both over 1600m, at Turffontein on Sansui Summer Cup Day, Saturday 25 November.

There are 38 entries for the Graham Beck Stakes and the bad news for Laird and Van Zyl is their charges have landed up with wide draws, not the place to be over 1400m on the Standside track.

Mike de Kock has a number of entries and they have mixed draws but he will be happy Hakeem, who ran third behind Broadway Trip, has landed a reasonable draw.

He also has Silver Thursday, a winner last Saturday, in the Starling Stakes.

Another interesting entry is Louis Goosen-trained Zen Arcade who was beaten on debut but has won two races since then.

It is interesting to note Port Elizabeth trainer Yvette Bremner has nominated two runners for this event, Veeipee Club and Via Seattle.
