Citizen teams up with Nageng Primary for the Charity Mile
The 16 charities, celebrities and media partners have been teamed up for this year’s R1-million Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile (Grade 2) over 1600m on Saturday 4 November. The final field for the popular race will be announced today at 1pm on Tellytrack.
The Charity Mile is a normal race in every sense, with the horses running to earn a portion of the R1-million stake for their owner, trainer and jockey.
What makes it unique is that the 16 horses will also run for a charity, with their finishing positions determining how much each charity wins.
Each horse is publically represented by a celebrity and has a media partner.
The celebrities will be assigned a horse at today’s announcement.
A total of R1 million is given to charity on the day and no charity goes home empty-handed.
Emotions run high throughout the day, with the joy, excitement and tears from the representatives producing some of the most poignant moments in horseracing annually.
Here’s what each charity gets: first – R150,000, second – R100,000, third – R80,000, fourth – R70,000 and fifth to 16th R50,000.
horse has been assigned to Nageng Primary and will be publically represented by SuperSport’s glamorous Carol Tshabalala.
In the past horse has won the race twice for the Animal Anti-Cruelty League.
The Animal Anti-Cruelty League has won the biggest prize three times since the concept of tying a race to charity was first introduced in 2006.
World cruiserweight titleholder Kevin Lerena, who is sponsored by TAB, will represent the animal welfare organisation this year.
Get It South, a lifestyle magazine geared towards residents of the southern suburbs of Johannesburg, is the media partner.
Lerena publically represented New Predator last year when the Johan Janse van Vuuren-trained horse won R150,000 for the Peermont Education Trust Bursary Programme. New Predator’s media partner was popular online radio station Mix FM, which was tied to a previous winner – Bezanova, who ran for the National Horse Trust in 2014.
