MONTECASINIO: PUPILS AT PARADISE BEND HIT JACKPOT
Tsogo Sun’s programme focuses on education, training for disadvantaged.
Montecasino last month handed over 200 books, together with crossword puzzle books donated by Caxton and Fourways Review, to Paradise Bend Primary School. The books were collected in a book drive run by Montecasino and Skoobs Theatre of Books in honour of World Literacy Month in September.
They were donated, mostly by staff members, as well as guests and members of the public, at a depository at Skoobs.
Paradise Bend Primary School accommodates about 1 000 pupils and is a new beneficiary of Montecasino’s, which has invested heavily over the years in CSI activities that are primarily focused on educational initiatives in schools in the Diepsloot area, 10km from the precinct and home to many staff members.
Lisa Sukdev, Montecasino’s public relations manager, said at the handover: “Literacy is the foundation of learning and with a high proportion of schools in disadvantaged areas lacking libraries, it is important to try to make a difference to those [pupils’] lives.
“It’s a privilege to be able to contribute to improving literacy in local disadvantaged communities. This initiative is not merely a token gesture.”
In 2018, students will submit book reviews on a monthly basis, for a R200 reward and will have their reviews published in the Fourways Review.
Tsogo Sun’s CSI programmes are primarily focused on education and training for disadvantaged pupils, reaching more than 40 000 children and youth around the country.
The programmes for primary grades include early childhood development projects, life skills training, and the Tsogo Sun Moves for Life national chess programme. For high school pupils they include leadership training, career development, and preparation for employment. – Citizen reporter
