- Kgosi Modisane

African man’s lifelong fight for freedom is something every child on this continent should see.

Kickstarting the months of November, eTV will be airing an award-winning international four-part miniseries titled Roots. The two hour long special will air on Mondays between 8.30pm and 10pm and is a remake documentary film of the life of Kunta Kinte, based on the novel by Alex Haley, Roots.

Debuting globally in 2016, the miniseries received an award for outstanding writing in a television movie and was nominated more than five times at Primetime Emmy Awards, as well as the Critics’ Choice Television Awards.

With the storyline being based on the life of an African man captured and sold to live a life in slavery in America, viewers will also get to explore the lead character’s lifelong fight for freedom, played by English actor Malachi Kirby.

Born into a family of warriors, Kinte gets captured and sold into slavery by enemies of his tribe back in West Africa.

His strong physique and unchained mentality sees the young man brave his new surroundings with the hopes of someday returning to the home of his ancestors.

Roots boasts a star-studded cast, which includes both local and international film and TV royalty such as Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Nokuthula Ledwaba, Lemogang Tsipa and Nandi Nyembe.

This miniseries is bound to get you talking about the cruel injustice of slavery, which is still being practised in this day and age.

The life of Kunta Kinte is a story which every young child living in Africa needs to witness.

Catch the two hour, four-part series Roots, every Monday on eTV 8.30pm -10pm. Celebrating the 30th year of daytime soapie making, three members of the Bold and the Beautiful cast (Karla Mosley, Heather Tom and Jacob Young) recently visited South Africa for a week’s interaction with the Mzansi audience.

While on their visit, the cast made a pit stop on the set of SABC’s local soapie Isidingo, where they were hosted by soapie couple Lerato and Sechaba Moloi, played by Motlatsi Mafatshe and Tema Sebopedi.

Viewers and fans of the American soapie will get to see their favourites from The Bold and the Beautiful in Horizon Deep as they visit Lerato and Sechaba at their home.

Lerato also gets the opportunity to cook a meal for her international guests, which happens to be one of the country’s traditional delicacies Mogodi (tripe). They witness a conniving Nina having a hard time accepting Georgie’s newly found child.

Rajesh and Kgothalo struggle to keep their hands off each other.
