SA team gave it their best shot

The 10 South African drivers who contested this year’s Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals in Portimao, Portugal, came home with a fighting fifth place in the DD2 Masters and a sixth place in the Mini Max classes.

A total of 350 drivers from 59 countries participat­ed in six separate title chases.

Youngster Leyton Fourie from Alberton led his final race for a while, before finishing sixth in the Mini Max event for drivers aged 10-13 years old.

In the DD2 Masters Class for drivers aged 32 years and over Michael Stephen, a multiple SA champion, started in 11th place after various mishaps. He scythed through the pack to take an eventual fifth place overall.

The other South Africans who made it to the finals finished as follows: Jonathan Pieterse – 25th in the DD2 class, Joshua Coertze – 28th in the Junior Max class and Muhammad Wally was 24th in the Micro Max class for drivers aged from seven to 10 years.
