Goal-happy Amajita in confident mood ahead of tournament

- Tshepo Ntsoelengoe

Amajita had a fine weekend of Cosafa Under-20 Championship preparations, finishing it all off by thrashing Lesotho 5-0 in an international friendly match in Maputsoe on Sunday.

This was the second meeting of the sides after three days, having first played on Friday, with Amajita also winning that game 1-0 at the same venue.

In the second meeting, the South Africans showed their prowess in front of goal, scoring twice in the first half and three in the second courtesy of Luvuyo Mkhatshana’s brace and one goal each from Katlego Ntshabeleng, Nkosinghiphile Ngcobo and Sifundo Sibiya (right).

Coach Thabo Senong believes the latest win will boost the confidence of the players ahead of the tournament in Zambia early next month and was content with his charges’ display.

“Once again we would love to thank the Lesotho Football Association for the friendly match as we are surely coming together as a unit.

“I am very happy with the boys’ performance today (Sunday), they are adapting very well to the tactical formation we have been implementing,” Senong was quoted as saying on safa.net.

“It is also great for their confidence in that they are scoring goals ahead of the tournament. We will conclude this past week’s camp and finalise our Cosafa Cup squad during the week, before returning to camp for our last set of preparations before traveling to Zambia.”

Senong will assemble the team for the second and final camp on December 1 where he will select a total of 20 players that will head to Zambia for the tournament which starts on December 6 and runs until December 16.

Meanwhile, the national under-17 women’s team are currently in camp as they prepare for a 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifying match against Botswana at the Lobatse Sports Complex on Friday.

The team will depart for Botswana tomorrow and return to the country on Saturday with the return leg set to be played two weeks later.

The 2019 Under-17 Fifa Women’s World Cup will be played in Uruguay from November 13 until December 1.
