United focus on scrap for points
CATCH-UP: THEY HAVE ONLY PLAYED FIVE GAMES SO FAR
Tinkler’s men to take on a desperate Ajax Cape Town.
SuperSport United begin their catch-up programme in the Absa Premiership tonight at Mbombela Stadium as they gear up to face Mother City outfit Ajax Cape Town.
Matsatsantsa are coming off the back of a Caf Confederation final defeat at the hands of Congolese giants TP Mazembe. United defender Grant Kekana told The Citizen that coach Eric Tinkler has urged his men to move away from the setback of losing out on the Confederation Cup and shift their focus to the league as they have only played five games so far.
“The coach told us that now it is all about shifting our focus onto the league now that the Confederation Cup is gone,” said Kekana.
“We gave it our all and we tried to win the trophy, but that is all long gone and we are focused on the Ajax game now,” he added.
While the capital city-based side may have played fewer games than any other team, Kekana understands that games in hand do not necessarily translate to points in hand until those games are actually converted into points.
“I think it is important to note that games in hand do not count as much if we do not use them.
“It is all about us really going out and winning the game and that is what we will be trying to do game by game.
“We are just trying to win these because games in hand do not count as points at the end of the day.”
Stanley Menzo’s side are not likely to have it all their way as they have only accumulated nine points from 10 games which leaves them third from bottom.
“Ajax are not going to be easy because of the position they are in and they don’t want to see themselves there. I am expecting it to be a tough game. From our side, we have a lot of depth in our squad and a lot of experience mixed with youngsters so some players might be rested,” said the 25-year-old defender.
