Parker tough on himself

Kaizer Chiefs striker Bernard Parker knows he can do better, despite recently celebrating his 50th goal in the famous gold and black colours of the Glamour Boys.

When the 31-year-old netted the equaliser against Free State Stars a fortnight ago, it was to be an important goal not just for Amakhosi who managed to secure a point, but for him as an individual.

“It is a great achievement,” admitted Parker. But he was not entirely satisfied with the feat as he feels he could have made that milestone a lot sooner.

“It’s a good achievement, although I am not entirely happy because with my standards and quality I would have wanted to have reached this milestone earlier. I am now in my seventh season at Chiefs

“To score 50 goals is great, but it’s not enough, especially when looking at what is the going rate of scoring in Europe, as that’s the top level and that’s where the standard is set,” said the former Benoni Premier United attacker.

Parker and many others associated with Amakhosi will be hoping that the achievement pushes him to score even more goals, starting in today’s Absa Premiership match against Chippa United. The Chilli Boys have always proved to be a stubborn opponent for the Glamour Boys.

Amakhosi coach Steve Komphela also alluded to a lack of quality balls reaching the strikers when he said Venezuelan striker Gustavo Paez could score more often if the supply had been good enough.

“While at Chiefs I want to score a lot more. I want to leave a legacy at the club and to be remembered like some of those other great strikers who played for this team,” said Parker.

Kick-off: 7.30pm.
