Makhura scores 5/10

- Eric Naki

In its latest score card for the provincial government, the Democratic Alliance in Gauteng rates the province’s Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi highly for his hard work, while it describes the ANC in the province as “intrinsically flawed”, as is the man who leads it, Paul Mashatile.

DA provincial leader John Moodey lambasted Premier David Makhura for not having delivered the bright future he promised when he was elected as premier in 2014. He said under Makhura, crime and unemployment were up, while accountability remained evasive.

The party gave Makhura a score of 5/10, saying the premier had become a “man of much talk and far too little action”.

In a statement that some described as unfair to Makhura, as this was a national competency, Moodey blamed the premier for having failed to lobby the transport minister to pull the plug on e-tolls.

The DA gave Lesufi 7/10, saying he continued to outperform his counterparts as he had the best interest of the pupils at heart.

“He is swift to respond to problems that are raised by the DA and although not always having the best solutions, is willing to robustly debate a position,” Moodey said.

Finance MEC Barbara Creecy was rated 4.5/10. Despite praising the MEC for having excelled in her department, the DA did not spare her a tongue-lashing. Moodey said that under her, there remained little consequence for abuse of state funds and systems.
