What a shame that we’re losing kids to booze

Our kids should know to choose their books rather than booze, writes Godfrey Malibe

When you go out to drinking places on Friday and Saturday nights, you’ll notice how many youngsters take part in drinking sprees. When you drive around in the early hours, you’ll be surprised to see our youth coming from those alcohol wells.

When you analyse those youngsters you’ll understand that they should be sleeping after studying their books, but un- fortunately they’ll be coming from their boozing sprees.

It comes as a shock to see how early our kids start drinking alcohol and smoking.

It is so disturbing to discover that kids smoke in their school uniforms in the toilets of their school. They do not even respect their teachers. They drink during school hours. They fight at school and school fields are not for soccer or rugby anymore, but battlefields for our boozing kids.

It is a shame that parents lose their kids at schools. Some of the kids get crippled from school, which should be one of the safest places for them. Their teachers are also not safe from the kids that they should be teaching their ABCs.

Our kids should know to choose their books rather than booze. They must know what comes first in their life.

They learn to wait for the right time. Everything has its time. There is time to go to school and learn. There will be time for them to afford things and an age where they’d do what they want with their lives.

Responsibility comes with maturity. You need to be accountable for your actions in life.
