The Citizen (Gauteng)

Are giants about to stir from slumber?

The Absa Premiership is set to be – as the trendy Twitter people say – lit. I say this because based on the signings that have happened at various clubs it has indicated an intention to do better.

It is good that Kaizer Chiefs have finally listened to the calls of their supporters and made some respectable signings in bringing in Leonardo Castro, Kabelo Mahlasela and Sphelele Ntshangase.

The trio are the best signings Amakhosi have made since 2012 and judging by the fans’ reaction, they appreciate the team’s off-season business so far. If the trio continue to work as hard as they did at their previous clubs, they will surely bring a different dimension to Amakhosi’s play and hopefully make the Glamour Boys glamorous and great again.

While there have been calls for coach Steve Komphela to be sacked, some have backed him, saying the team need to give him quality players to work with.

One hopes that the trio are just the beginning of a new era at Amakhosi, an era where the snake that guarded Bobby Motaung’s pocket has died and he can now easily and readily dig into it and buy quality players instead of waiting for out-of-contract bargains and the alleged “buy one and get two free” deals he made from across the Limpopo River.

Pirates have also been bold in the market this time around as they have reportedly made a mega-money offer for SuperSport

United’s unsettled striker Jeremy Brockie. Under Micho, the Buccaneers have improved in terms of performances but have lacked a lethal finisher up front to convert the chances.

One can only imagine the difference the “Bearded Assassin” would make in that Pirates team. The emergence of teams like SuperSport and Bidvest Wits in recent years has been what we have always wished for over the years so that the league is not a threeteam one where Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns dominate and other teams are there just to make up the numbers.

It has been unfortunate that when Wits and Matsatsantsa peaked, the Soweto giants embarked on a slump.

It can only be taken as a good indication that the country’s bestsupported teams are making good signings which could see them rise from the ashes and become more competitive again.

Cape Town City have also been doing some good business in the market and having proved to be a competitive side who want to bring the glory days back to the Mother City, one can’t help but look forward to see how they fare in their quest to be counted among the top teams in the country.

The one thing that one can say and hope is that the City management take some advice from a fellow football person and think about taking their coach Benni McCarthy for anger management classes because his antics over the past six months have not been acceptable.

Some coaches can be good at their job but because of poor manmanagement skills, they end up not living up to their true potential. Maritzburg United did it with Ernst Middendorp when he was there and he improved the team’s fortunes and guided them to their first-ever top eight finish a few years ago.
