Three new players, now Steve must deliver

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

There has always been a section of Kaizer Chiefs fans who have felt coach Steve Komphela (right) is like a man asked to fetch water using a bucket with holes in its base because of the kind of players the club signed whenever calls for his head gained momentum – and maybe rightly so.

Yet now that Amakhosi have learnt from past blunders and brought in three respectable players who have delighted the fans, Komphela will now have even fewer backers should results still not come.

Asked if having signed Sphelele Ntshangase, Leonardo Castro and Kabelo Mahlasela came with added pressure for him to produce, Komphela characteristically dodged the question.

“There is always pressure here. Whether with or without the new players,” he answered when asked after his side’s goalless draw against SuperSport United last weekend. None of the new players were in the team with Mahlasela out with an injury suffered during his first training session with the club last week.”

Ntshangase and Castro were only expected to start training with the team this week as they had been given some time off to finalise their relocation.

Komphela could not give a clear indication on whether he would make further s`ignings in the current transfer window.

“When the question of strengthening comes, one needs to look at it departmentally. We just need to convert our chances.”
