Royal Mojito looks up to the Club Challenge

- Clint Hutchison

– The Hong Kong Club Challenge Cup at Happy Valley today looks a competitive event but there should be some value to be had in the various exotics with the main one to beat being local trainer Dennis Yip’s charge Royal Mojito.

He is still a Hong Kong maiden but has been running well in defeat and only has to run up to his recent efforts in Race 6 to post a victory in what appears a slightly

Hong Kong

easier contest.

There have been three individual winners to come from the last race he competed which was over 1400m. The drop to 1200m is a positive and given he has some tactical speed, a favourable draw also gives him a great chance to stalk the speed and notch up his first win.

He is worthy of a TAB Win bet, but there could be some real value in the Exacta with the likes of David Ferraris-trained Breeders’ Star. This fellow will relish the predicted fast tempo and the three-time Happy Valley winner has been running better in defeat than the bare facts may suggest.

Another option for the Exacta is Arm Runda, who won his last start over the course and distance and appears quite leniently treated in the handicap.

In Race 4, Caspar Fownes and Zac Purton combine with The Judge who looks well placed to notch up a win with a drop in grade. When Fownes and Purton have combined this season, they have a 29 percent win strike-rate and better than 50 percent in the first three. It would appear that this galloper has been set up for this event and he makes appeal as a Win bet.

The best value bet on the card is in Race 7, the Chater Handicap, with John Size’s charge Calculation.

This English import should appreciate the move to the city circuit and it might suit his frontrunning style. He was excellent in defeat behind Morethanlucky on his last outing at Sha Tin.
