Swallows out to prove point
Swallows FC had to fight for their day in the spotlight again and beat five other amateur sides to get to the Nedbank Cup’s last-32, where they host Absa Premiership team Maritzburg United at Dobsonville Stadium tomorrow afternoon.
The Dube Birds – who now play in the third-tier ABC Motsepe League – have vowed to use their Ke Yona run to ensure supporters do not forget about them. Swallows coach Isaac Mphasane (above) said yesterday that being pitted against a Premiership team makes it easier for them to plan for the match.
“We beat Baberwa, Alexandra Aces, GaRankuwa United, Tembisa Sports Centre (all ABC Motsepe League teams) and the last team was from the SAB League,” said Mphasane.
“Maritzburg are a Premiership team and they are doing really well. They have a lot of talented and experienced players. They really go to town when they beat you.
“It is going to be special for the supporters. We hope it will bring more special memories for them. I know the stadium will be filled. All my boys are good, but there are some special players who will shine on the day. I am even scared that some Premiership teams will poach some of my boys after watching us,” he added.
“I have been given a great challenge to keep this big brand alive. I know it’s not going to be easy, but I know I can make it. I am happy so far and I do not feel any pressure.”
Swallows are sixth and trail leaders Maccabi FC by 11 points.
