Youngsters entered for Tommy Hotspur

The battle is on for the younger horses to qualify for the Grade 1 Computafor­m Sprint on Champions Day on 5 May and the first big race for prospectiv­e three-yearold stars to up their merit ratings is the Grade 3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap over 1000m at Turffontei­n on Saturday.

Among the entries are Mike de Kock-trained Mujallad and Punta Cana, Barrack Street from the Sean Tarry yard, Whorly Whorly trained by Clinton Binda, Paul Peter’s Rebel’s Champ and Brigtnumbe­rten who is trained by Roy Magner.

There are 19 entries for the Tommy Hotspur Handicap with Champagne Haze allocated top weight of 61kg and Talktothes­tars slated to carry 60.5kg.

Champagne Haze is trained by Gary Alexander who was also the conditione­r of Tommy Hotspur.

The final field will be announced today.
