Arrows hoping they can shoot straight in bid for MDC title

- Tshepo Ntsoelengoe

With just two games remaining to the end of the MultiChoice Diski Challenge league, Golden Arrows are well on course to clinch their second MDC trophy, with a four-point lead at the top of the table.

Arrows are on 29 points, while second-placed Bloemfontein Celtic are on 25 points.

Abafana Bes’thende could have sealed the deal in their previous game but were unfortunate to only draw 3-3 with Ajax Cape Town.

They need to beat Orlando Pirates at the Makhulong Stadium in the Diski Festival on Saturday to be crowned champions and goalkeeper Sherwin Naicker (right) is positive they can do it.

“We know the games are hard, but we will fight to the end to get three points and be crowned champions,” said Naicker.

“We could easily have finished the job in our previous game against Ajax, but they really gave us a good game. But I like the fact we have everything on the field even though at some point it seemed like we could lose. It just shows how determined and well-driven everybody is.

“Pirates are a good side, we know the game will be very difficult. But again, we have high hopes and have a positive mindset going into this game. We want to be the first team to win the league twice – everybody in the team is so motivated by that.”

Naicker, a former Jomo Cosmos goalkeeper, has been one of the outstanding performers in the Arrows side, with his experience playing a big role in the team’s bid for the league title. The shot-stopper says he is glad to have had this opportunity to play in the MDC and it keeps him on his toes as he looks for first-team action.

“It really helps in terms of getting game time, so whenever I will be called into action in the first team I will be ready.”
