The Citizen (Gauteng)

Optimism and cynicism from people on the streets

- Sanele Gumada and Chisom Jenniffer Okoye

The resignation of former president For me, it’s a regime change. I’m looking at the deeper aspects of it because it started in Libya, it went to Zimbabwe and now it’s here. I don’t really know who Cyril is representing. I’m more of the view that we shall wait and see. But what he did was a game-changer because Zuma wasn’t impeached, he resigned. Jacob Zuma left the country emotionally divided.

The Citizen went to the streets of Johannesburg to ask people how they felt about his last-minute I’m overwhelmed. I mean, when Zuma was in charge we didn’t get much benefit, so now he’s gone I’m sure everything is going to change. They say 18 is new beginnings, so its new beginnings for South Africa as a country. We’re going to move forward now. The new president, Cyril Ramaphosa, is going to make a lot of changes because he’s business-minded and that’s what I like about him. The future looks bright for us, especially with the high unemployment rate. I’m sure we will all get jobs now – no more walking around looking for jobs. resignation.

Despite the change to the political landscape, several people were reluctant to talk about the subject because it’s sensitive. Zuma was not a bad president. I think he is a smart and intelligent person. We have seen him do many good and bad things. I do not feel that it’s fair to hold on to the bad things that he has done. The next president will do the same things. This is how it has always been and this is how it will always be. My only fear is that now that he is out, the next president will engage in corruption because he has seen Zuma do it and get away with it. Now that Zuma has resigned, a lot of things have to change. We have to change our normal way of doing things and adapt to a new way of life.

But while some people felt that his resignation would see South Africa going in the right direction, others believed that life would be much the same. Although he was a good man, I still think that the bad things he has done outweigh the good. I feel there won’t be much of a difference. Corruption has always been there and there won’t be any difference now that Zuma is no longer the president. There is a lot of corruption happening anyway so I do not think there will be a drastic change.
