Moon becoming a star

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

Ryan Moon has been a hero for Kaizer Chiefs in the past few weeks, scoring important goals that have kept the team in the chase for the Absa Premiership and Nedbank Cup double. The 21-year-old has scored in all of Amakhosi’s last four matches and a section of the team’s fans see him as a messiah who has come to help the team end their twoand-a-half-year barren run in terms of meaningful silverware.

“I am honoured to be called that but I can’t let it go to my head. I need to keep my feet on the ground and continue working hard,” he said yesterday.

“I am happy playing and getting on the scoresheet. I am still young and still have a lot to learn and improve on. So far it’s been good, and I would like to continue scoring,” he added.

Moon credited his good run on the extra work he does after training with the coaches and especially the side’s veteran striker, Bernard Parker.

“You have to show your performance in training. The way you train is how you play. I have been doing well at training and scoring and combining well with the other strikers. That’s been the most important thing.

“We stay and do extra training with Parker. I am very close to him and I listen to what he has to say because he has played at the highest level. I feed off him. He has been there and has done it for Bafana Bafana, for Chiefs and overseas,” he said.

His three league goals have come off his head, and that has left people wondering if he can score with his feet, though he did deflect one in with his foot in the Nedbank Cup win over Golden Arrows last weekend. “Yes I can,” he said. “As a striker you can use any part of the body to score. What’s important is the goal, not how you scored it. A goal is a goal. However it comes I will take it,” he said.

Moon will be Steve Komphela’s go-to guy again when they meet Cape Town City in an Absa Premiership match at the FNB Stadium tomorrow night. It is a game Chiefs badly need to win after their two consecutive draws.
