Duduzane off the hook
ESTINA: INVESTIGATORS SAY THERE IS NO WARRANT FOR ZUMA’S SON
Ajay Gupta wanted on corruption charges unrelated to dairy farm scandal.
The acting national head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Lieutenant-General Yolisa Matakata, yesterday declared the Hawks never said Duduzani Zuma, son of former president Jacob Zuma, and his business associate, Ajay Gupta, were wanted in connection with the Estina Dairy Farm probe.
Speaking at a media briefing, Matakata said although there was a warrant of arrest out for Ajay Gupta on corruption charges unrelated to the Estina investigation, there was no warrant of arrest out against Duduzani Zuma.
She also said she was under no political pressure and that the Hawks were in the first phase of their investigation.
“We would have wanted to see all 13 suspects arrested by now, but we are still working on the other phases of the state capture investigations,” Matakata said.
She said the Gupta family’s lawyers told the Hawks that they would hand their client over on the day the eight suspects were arrested for the Estina Dairy Farm corruption charges, but that he never showed up.
She said she was not at liberty to state what the corruption charges against Ajay Gupta involved.
She also declined to say if the charges had anything to do with the allegations of bribes offered to former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas by members of the Gupta family.
Matakata said the Hawks could not name the outstanding five suspects in the Estina case as it might compromise the investigation.
