Don’t let your cat become a big fur mat

If you are considering welcoming a new family member such as a Persian cat, a long-haired breed, or you already have one but don’t know how to deal with their fur mats, you may find some help here:

The cause

Matted fur is usually caused by rubbing movements and over time build-up from lack of grooming. Mats tend to occur between the legs, under the chest, under the tail and around the collar. They are also the result of shedding.

Is it really a knot?

If you notice any clumps of entangled, knotted fur then it is a mat, and if unmanaged it can irritate your cat’s skin, cause infection, pain, discomfort and is a breeding ground for parasites such as ticks and fleas.

Tackling the problem

If the mat isn’t too big or tight, then gently work it apart with your fingers, comb out the smaller tangles with a metal comb and an oil-based detangling spray.

Comb in short, fast strokes which are less painful, hold the hair below the knot next to the skin, and gently separate the tangle into smaller strands.

Keep in mind that the longer you leave the knot unattended, the tighter and bigger the mat will become and the more difficult to remove.

Prevention is be er than cure

By brushing your feline’s coat daily you can curb matting and nip knots at the onset.

Is also important to run your fingers through your cat’s fur to feel any clumps. In more serious cases, your cat may need its entire coat shaved, however, a professional pet groomer or vet with the right tools and know-how can help with the correct shampoo, detangling conditioners, and sprays to use as part of your daily grooming routine.

Remember never to attempt to cut out a knot as it may cause a wound.

The Mikki Ball pin brush for dogs and cats is R210 from Petheaven.co.za. With nickel steel ball pins mounted on an air cushion to enhance grooming, the brush helps reduce tangles in matted hair.
