Discipline key, says Sekano

- Thembinkosi Sekgaphane

Former Moroka Swallows midfielder Steve Sekano (above) is ready to lend a helping hand to the Dube Birds in their quest to return to the Absa Premiership.

Sekano played for Swallows for ten years, signing for the Dube Birds at the age of 18.

Sekano is the director of Steve Sekano Foundation, which is an organisation that donates sports equipment to township schools in Gauteng. The foundation encourages kids to participate in different sporting codes to help them discover their talents. The foundation hosts sporting tournaments in Soweto, with the next one set to happen on the last weekend of March at Fiat Stadium in Meadowlands.

The former midfielder is also the chairman of Nkano FC, which campaigns in the Safa Promotion league. Sekano has decided to run the team and not coach as he believes that not all former football players should coach a team.

“I am helping the community on the development side mostly. I focus on netball, basketball ... hockey. Sports is not just soccer,” Sekano added .

With everyone complaining about the quality of South African football, Sekano thinks there is improvement looking at the achievement of local teams in continental club competitions.

“Players need to understand that they are at work, a player can’t be good for one season and the next they are not as good. You know I have never taken alcohol or smoked while I was a footballer. I made sure that I stayed clean.

“So players need to take their careers seriously.

“The teams are facing the challenge of disciplining players that is why they don’t perform consistently.”
