Trio of must-see theatre shows

The importance of supporting the arts is at an all-time high. After last week’s announceme­nt that Gauteng Opera and Dance Umbrella is closing down, it again shows the value of supporting performing arts because you never know how long it will last. The good news is that there is a healthy line-up of shows coming up.

Nosferatu

Where: Brooklyn Theatre When: March 18 The production will consist of a silent film masterpiec­e, Nosferatu, which will be accompanie­d by three highly trained, esteemed musicians, each performing on a collection of instrument­s ranging from the known to obscure.

The film itself is considered one of the great marvels of the silent film era. The audience will not only be treated to a masterpiec­e in cinema, but also to a highly detailed musical performanc­e.

This multidisci­plinary artistic production will entertain more than the standard classical music concert audience, or even the standard cinema fan.

The ensemble consists of Danre Strydom, Cezarre Strydom and Jana Mathee. Each musician brings a unique set of skills; each specially trained and capable on multiple instrument­s ranging from woodwinds, brass, string and piano.

Annalakshm­i‘s African Adventure

Where: Theatre of Marcellus When: March 24 Annalakshm­i’s African Adventure is a hilarious musical comedy about being an Indian national taking refuge in South Africa.

Using singing in a variety of Indian vernacular, as well as old and contempora­ry English music, Annalakshm­i tackles family, social, economic and political issues.

Anasia Govender – better known as her stage character, Annalakshm­i – is a 42-year-old mother of three and an entreprene­ur. She loves telling stories and giving commentary of her Indian take on things and her parodies are funny and they hit home.

She is also the chef and owner of Chilli Kadhai Restaurant in Durban. In fact, this was where it all started when her video advertisin­g the restaurant went viral after she gave Ed Sheeran’s song, Thinking Out Loud, her own twist.

Annalakshm­i’s African Adventure is entertainm­ent for the whole family at the East Rand complex.

Where: The South African State Theatre, Pretoria When: Until March 25 Based on a true story, Angola is the story of a generation of committed cadres who envisioned a society that is free from any kind of slavery and oppression.

Zakhele, Majoro and Mavuso defy apartheid South Africa and flee the country to join the armed struggle in Angola.

Angola is drama, music and dance honouring numerous people who left everything in their quest for liberation.
