Fourie has another Bountiful day, with a four-timer

- Ken Nicol

Richard Fourie was once again the star of the show at Durbanville on Saturday as he booted home four winners, as opposed to what has become his customary three.

It started in Race 1 when juvenile colt Bountiful Strength scored for Joey Ramsden. This was also a first winner for fledgling stallion and multiple Grade 1 winning race horse Jackson. Assistant trainer Ricky Sobotker said the youngster had “shown quite a bit of speed but will go further”.

Fourie was also successful for ‘JR’ in the top liner MR 81 Handicap over 2400m, expertly coming from last on Paddington, who normally gets going too late.

The same tactics were used to guide overdue Maiden Plate winner Royal Marine home for Greg Ennion in Race 4, while he then showed his versatility as game six-year old Dayonaut virtually went pillar to post in Race 8, a MR 79 Handicap over 1250m for Paul Reeves.

His trainer admitted he was “worried about the turn, as he still acts like a baby and ducks around. But he handled it well today”.

Racing Express top bet of the day Canukeepitsecret didn’t disappoint, strolling home effortlessly by 3.5 lengths in Race 3, a Maiden Juvenile Plate for fillies over 1000m.

Vaughan Marshall said this full sister to Grade 1 winners All Is Secret and The Secret Is Out “wasn’t fully wound up first time out, but was ready today. She gives me the impression she may be looking for further, and will be on the float to Durban on Thursday”.

Well-tried maiden Symphony made it a decent day for the yard by winning Race 5 on his ninth race track appearance.

Candice Bass-Robinson also notched a double, as Sacred Arrow and Queen Moira both did the business under stable jockey Aldo Domeyer.

Biggest shock of the day was Super Performer who won Race 6 a Maiden Plate over 1400m at 151, paying R13.80 on the TAB. Yet to finish within four lengths in seven previous attempts, he made all to comfortably hold off regular bridesmaids Sark and African Messiah.

Brett Crawford explained that “the ear muffs he wore today helped him settle, as he has been overracing”.
