RARE WIN: JOMO SONO’S MEN NOW ONLY TWO POINTS BEHIND REAL KINGS IN PROMOTION BATTLE

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

Highlands Park run riot as Mbombela are crushed 7-1.

Jomo Cosmos are back in contention for a promotion play-off position after just their second win in nine matches on Sunday, beating embattled Ubuntu Cape Town 3-1 to go within two points of third-placed Real Kings with six games to go.

Ezenkosi are now in with a realistic chance of finishing either second or third and getting a chance to fight for a place in the Absa Premiership next season.

Sicelo Mkhize was inspirational, equalising after Duncan Adonis had put the visitors in front at Vosloorus Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Clifford Mulenga and Tebogo Thlolane then followed Mkhize and added their names to the scoresheet and ensured the home side took the points and moved to fourth place in the table.

The weekend’s big winners, however, were Black Leopards who beat fellow play-off chasers Real Kings 2-1 away to go second.

Mwape Musonda and Phathutshedzo Nange were the scorers for Lidoda Duvha, while Nkosingiphile Phewa’s 10th goal of the season was not enough to save the Magic Boys’ blushes.

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila were stunned at home by a resilient Richards Bay side who beat them 1-0 to earn what could prove to be important points for the newly formed side as they struggle to move away from the relegation zone.

Stanley Muishond scored the Rich Boys’ all-important goal and midfielder Siphelele Mkhulisi told Phakaaathi yesterday they are hoping to build on the win going forward.

“We had to win,” said Mkhulisi. “Things were not looking good for us and we needed the three points more than they do.

“It helped a little that we have players like myself who have played for Limpopo teams who are used to the conditions there. We now have to build on this win ad ensure we stay in this league and fight for promotion next season,” said the former Black Leopards player.

NFD leaders Highlands Park were in mean mode as they turned Mbombela United into easy prey, thrashing them 7-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Siyanda Khumalo may have thought he had brought his side back into the game when he equalised before half-time after Mothobi Mvala had opened the scoring, but Owen da Gama’ side had other ideas as the Lions of the North were rampant in the second half, scoring another six.
