‘Ladies day’ at Greyville

- Ken Nicol

Racing looks competitive on the Greyville Polytrack today - but it could turn out to be something of a “ladies day” with all three top win bets being fillies.

The first stand out bet is Majestic Mary in Race 2. After two uninspiring efforts on turf, this daughter of Dynasty made big improvement when trying this surface last time. Despite a slow start over 1000m, she made good late progress to get up for second behind Rosie Bubbles.

She now goes 200m further, has former champion jockey Anton Marcus in the irons, and jumps from a favourable draw. She looks an excellent Win bet, and can be bankered in the PA and BiPot.

Main danger looks to be Irish Marsh. She has 4kg-claiming apprentice LJ Ferraris up, and is drawn on the paint.

Another filly with solid win credentials is Illuminate in Race 5. She has finished strongly in all three outings (all on turf), and last time had the rest well beaten when second to Destiny Duchess on her first venture beyond sprints. She now tries 1800m, which should be right up her alley, and if handling the Polytrack will take a power of beating.

Lightly raced Lady Jay looks the primary threat. Fonteyn has had 22 maiden starts, but has placed 10 times on the Polytrack, and can also be involved.

In Race 7 Champenois is another who makes a strong case. Never out of the first two in her home province, she found the Cape horses a little too strong.
