SHOCK: JOSE’S MEN FAIL TO BREAK DOWN STUBBORN ALBION

-

City’s Pep Guardiola is the first Spaniard to win English title.

Jose Mourinho applauded Manchester City’s Premier League title success, but lambasted Manchester United after West Bromwich Albion’s shock 1-0 win yesterday.

In order to prevent City from being crowned champions for a few more days, United had to avoid defeat against Albion.

But Jay Rodriguez’s 73rd minute header gave them a stunning victory after they arrived at Old Trafford having lost nine of their previous 10 games.

“I knew that sooner or later they would be champions and if I was in their position I would be very upset if someone said they won the title because Manchester United lost against West Brom,” said Mourinho.

“They won because they were the best team, they lost only a few points. Probably because I won eight championships, I was not in the moon with the victory against them,” he said, referring to United’s comeback last weekend from two goals down to defeat City 3-2.

City captain Vincent Kompany led their title celebrations yesterday, tweeting: “Champions! What a great feeling! So happy to be able to share another trophy with our amazing fans!”

City manager Pep Guardiola was not immediately available for comment as he had planned a day of golf with his son Marius.

Guardiola is the first Spaniard to win the English title. He won three league titles with Barcelona and twice lifted the Champions League trophy during his Camp Nou reign.

The 47-year-old also took the German title three times with Bayern Munich.

Speaking after City’s victory over Spurs on Saturday, Guardiola said he believes the unique strength in depth and physical demands of the Premier League makes this triumph among his very best. He also conceded it was sweet to triumph in a country where some critics claimed his purist principles couldn’t flourish.

Guardiola and his players will have the chance to celebrate properly on Sunday when they host Swansea in their next fixture.

“Our Time. Our City. Premier League Champions 17/18,” City posted on Twitter. –
