Soccer clubs must not ignore the fans

The violence that characterised the loss by Kaizer Chiefs to Free State Stars, has been a bubble waiting to burst. This should serve as a lesson: steps need to be taken to avert situations that lead to loss of life and damage to property. But unfortunately authorities in football and law enforcement only act after the damage has been done. They do not take proactive measures. We only hear of devised plans in place after disasters.

Chiefs fans’ anger has been gaining with each game and this was aggravated by the arrogance displayed by the club authorities who failed to address the grievances of their supporters.

We saw it happen at Chiefs’ rivals Pirates. The problem was only addressed by the authorities after violence had broken out.

Communication is one important aspect of management that must not be overlooked, and that’s what Chiefs authorities failed to do: communicate and iron out the thorny issues with their fans.

Supporters of sports clubs are important stakeholders who should be consulted and listened to. They cannot just be ignored, because of the “it’s our family business” mindset. There is a social marriage between fans and clubs so any attempts to dismiss their views lead to such unfortunate reactions by fans.

Chiefs management was moving on a parallel path with their fans and all with eyes to see could see the bursting of the bubble coming.
