Play-offs beckon for gutsy Cosmos

NAILBITER: STRUGGLING EAGLES BROUGHT DOWN TO EARTH

Jomo Cosmos have secured a spot in the promotion play-offs after beating embattled Super Eagles 3-2 at Vosloorus Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Ezenkosi have now amassed 49 points which guarantees them at worst a third-place finish, depending on the result of their last match on May 13.

Jomo Sono’s side came from a goal down to win the match with Clifford Mulenga, Lefa Hlongwane and Tebogo Makobela scoring the goals.

Cosmos captain Thato Lingwati is, however, concerned about complacency creeping in and warned that nothing has been achieved as yet.

“We put up a gutsy show to secure the maximum points which was enough to take us into the play-offs, but we can’t be complacent at this stage. The real battle is yet to be won,” he said.

“We made things tough for ourselves by not taking our chances and committing silly errors in defence.

“It’s still a long way to go ... but mentally and physically we are ready to go all the way,” Lingwati added.

Cosmos wrap up their league programme with a tough fixture away to Black Leopards who will be desperate for full points to earn a spot in the play offs. Lidoda Duvha were halted by Highlands Park who beat them 2-1 at Makhulong Stadium on Sunday.

Should Leopards fail to get the three points against Cosmos they could lose out on the play-offs spot but that depends on how Real Kings and Witbank Spurs do in their final matches.

Royal Eagles, meanwhile, moved out of relegation danger after securing a point with a 1-1 draw at Cape Town All Stars. Eagles are on 33 points and safe from relegation. Ubuntu Cape Town were dragged back to second from bottom after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Richards Bay.

The win was vital for Richards Bay but it did little to ease their woes as they are still part of the four teams in danger of following Mthatha Bucks to the ABC Motsepe League next season.
