FOSTER STARSTRUCK BY BAFANA CALL-UP

After helping Amajita saunter into the final round of the Caf Under-20 Afcon qualifiers, Orlando Pirates’ young striker Lyle Foster has earned himself a first senior national team call-up, after being named in the Bafana Bafana Cosafa Cup squad by head coach Stuart Baxter this week.

The 17-year-old Bucs striker scored a brace in Amajita’s 3-0 win over Mozambique in the second leg of the qualifiers at Moruleng Stadium last weekend and will now shift his focus in helping Bafana at the Cosafa Cup, from May 26 until June 10 in Polokwane.

“It was a great feeling to score – as a striker it is always good to get a goal because it boosts your confidence. I am happy that we won and now we are getting closer to qualifying for the Afcon tournament,” he continued.

“I didn’t really expect to be called up to the senior team, it is really an honour and privilege to have been selected for Bafana. It is every player’s dream to play for their own country and I am just happy that I am part of the squad.”

The teenager adds that the call-up is a big step in his career and he will be looking to learn as much as he can from everyone in the national team set-up. And what really fascinates him is seeing a number of young players which he says is really good for the future of South African football.

“It is a great platform for me to grow and learn as much as I can as a player. Just being part of the senior team will really open my mind and I’ll see what I’ll be facing in the future. I have been part of the junior national teams and I know what is expected from me, but this is a big stage and I want to gain as much experience as I can.

“The squad is made up of a number of young players and I believe everyone in the team will be eager to help the nation do well at the tournament.”
