Willemse plays the classic victim

-

While some viewed Ashwin Willemse’s walkout as heroic, I personally feel that it was grandstanding of the highest order.

To do this in full view of the paying public, not only caused harm to the station but stirred the proverbial hornet’s nest. Race relations have never been at a worse state in this country and anyone using this to vent their frustrations is playing with fire and risking further polarisation between the races.

Even though the CEO of SuperSport stated there was nothing racial about the incident, it was obvious that some journalists were almost disappointed at being left empty-handed.

The mud-slinging effect has left both Nick Mallett and Naas Botha stained and potentially spoiled their careers.

Willemse, pictured, enjoys the same rights that all employees have in the workplace and there was no reason not to follow the correct management channels – with even a threat of going public – if he felt it was not being addressed. This would have been effective without carrying out the threat.

It is immaturity beyond comprehension and playing the classic victim. It is not clever or heroic. It’s an easy stick to beat with and many of our politicians use it. E Joubert, Parktown
