Moyane in the dock on Friday

- Daniel Friedman

Tom Moyane’s already substantial legal woes look set to intensify, after accusations of assault have seen him ordered to appear in court on Friday. Moyane, pictured, allegedly attacked the 17-year-old mother of his baby grandson during an argument at his Johannesburg home.

Johannesburg police have confirmed the suspended SA Revenue Service (Sars) commissioner will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday on the assault charge. Moyane has been accused of kicking the young woman “like a ninja” and rugby tackling her.

It was also reported that Moyane accused the 17-year-old of witchcraft and blames her for destroying his empire.

The alleged victim’s mother, Cynthia Masina, was interviewed on Talk Radio 702 yesterday, saying, “She is still emotional. I told her to go to counselling.”

Masina also alleges her daughter has been emotionally abused by Moyane and his wife prior to the incident.

An apparent medical report from the Helen Joseph Hospital noted the victim of the attack had a bruised jaw, a cut to the side of her cheek and a bruised abdomen.

This, however, is but one of Moyane’s current legal troubles. The Hawks have launched a criminal investigation, which they hope to finalise this month.

This is separate to the disciplinary inquiry, which recently saw its presiding officer Kate O’Regan replaced due to a perceived conflict of interests. Advocate Azhar Bham SC has been appointed as the new presiding officer by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Moyane was suspended as Sars head by Ramaphosa‚ who has accused him of gross misconduct over his handling of an investigation into former senior Sars official Jonas Makwakwa.

The economist has been criticised for his financial management of Sars and his treatment of an investigation that saw the departure of 55 senior staff and managers from the organisation.

She is still emotional. I told her to go to counselling.
