Chief to go to court over election

Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana (right) has vowed to challenge in court Saturday’s decision by a South African Football Association elective congress to vote in Danny Jordaan for a second term as president of Safa.

It will not be the first time that Nonkonyana has taken Safa to court. He failed in a bid to interdict the elections, and lost a case of unfair dismissal against Safa, who axed him as vice-president in October 2014.

Nonkonyana also indicated his intention to run for president earlier in the year, but this never happened, with the Football Transformation Forum saying he could not run as he was not part of Safa’s structures, and he owed Safa money.

“As I indicated when I launched my campaign to contest the Safa presidency position – the decision of Safa Congress in March this year is unconstitutional in that the constitution prescribed that the decision of the extraordinary congress (held on 21 October 2017 to hold the election earlier) was unconstitutional and was a blatant strategy by Dr Jordaan and his honchos to elect him unopposed,” said Chief Nonkonyana in a statement on Sunday.

Jordaan was elected un- opposed on Saturday after Ace Ncobo withdrew at the last minute, claiming he was threatened.

“It (the elective congress) is illegal,” Ncobo told reporters.

“I thought by registering its illegality we would ... discuss this. On top of that, I received threats, there is a delegate who threatened to punch my face.”

Jordaan, however, maintained the election was legal and Safa said Fifa representatives had endorsed Saturday’s proceedings.

“Addressing the delegates that included Fifa representatives ... Solomon Mudege, Senior Development Manager and David Fani, the Regional Development Manager; Electoral Committee chair McCaps Motimele said he gave the process a clean bill adding the behaviour of the Safa Council should be a model among other federations and FAs,” read a part of Safa’s statement.

“In conclusion, Motimele, who is a senior legal counsel, said the elections and processes had shown the maturity of Safa delegates.

“The same sentiments were shared by the Fifa representatives who said they were happy with the proceedings and processes of the elective congress on Saturday. They will write a report to Fifa to this effect.”
