At this point it is unclear what Tefu Mashamaite’s next destination is, after his contract with SuperSport United was not renewed. Mashamaite remained mum on his next move, as he is enjoying his holiday, while his agent was unreachable for comment.

Mashamaite (left) joined United in 2016, but has had little impact since returning from a season-long stint at Swedish side BK Häcken.

“Coming back from Sweden where I had struggles with a knee injury, I eventually recovered when the team were doing really well domestically and that was during the reign of Stuart Baxter,” he told Phakaaathi.

“I found it difficult to break into the first team but I played in some of the games in the Confederation Cup and I was happy that I was involved from the beginning right up to the final and that was a big moment in my career – to play in the Confederation Cup and reach the final,” he added.

Having enjoyed success with Kaizer Chiefs as he captained them to a league and cup double before his clean sweep of individual awards in the 2014/15 Absa Premiership season – the former Bidvest Wits skipper, does, however, wish he could have made more of his stay in the capital city.

“I began struggling with injuries in Sweden and one of the reasons why I came back is that we played on an artificial pitch and that was not easy. It was the third time I had suffered a setback because of injury. You can’t always expect to be at the top.

“I would have loved to have achieved more and to be involved more but this is football and it is unpredictable in its nature.

“Before I became captain at Wits, it didn’t start all that well. I signed a professional contract in 2006 and I only started playing in 2008. It is a cliché but people say when you are down, what matters is how you get up,” he concluded.
