Singh aims to go one better

- Tshepo Ntsoelengoe

The last time Luther Singh played in the Cosafa Cup was in 2016 in the Under-20 edition of the competition where they lost 2-1 to Zambia in the final.

The memory is still fresh in the mind of the Braga striker and he is hoping for a better result with Bafana Bafana.

Despite failing to lift trophy, the 20-year-old striker was the top scorer in the youth edition of the competition, scoring five goals. He is eager to see the senior national team doing better, but admits this is a totally different stage ahead of their quarterfinal with Madagascar at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium tomorrow.

“This is a different level, it is not the same as Under-20 but you will learn from the experience you get here. You grab it with both hands because such a chance may not come again. But I would like this time to be better because we came second at Under-20 level, we played the best football we could, unfortunately, we only lost one – that game in the final, where it mattered the most.”

“I think with the group we have we can do well in the tournament if we work together as a team,” said Singh.

The young striker got his second call-up to the senior national team having made his debut in an international friendly against Angola last year. He is part of a mixture of youth and experience in the squad called up by head coach Stuart Baxter, who says the group have been working very hard at training.

“This is a very interesting and ambitious group, I hope the rest of the camp continues the way it has been until now. They have been very diligent in their work, they have been on time in everything that we have done, and it is a really promising group.

“We will continue to work just to get the players to know each other better and learn our structure.”

Last year, Bafana finished fifth. They last won the competition in 2016.
