Banyana inspired by fans
SEOPOSENWE: IT WAS A GREAT TURNOUT
SA book tickets to Ghana after 6-0 rout of Lesotho.
Banyana Banyana striker Jermaine Seoposenwe says their 6-0 hammering of Lesotho in the second leg of the 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifier at Petrus Molemela Stadium on Sunday was inspired by a great turnout of fans and most importantly, it was a much better showing from the team following an unconvincing performance in the first leg.
The victory saw Banyana register a 7-0 aggregate win, having won the first leg 1-0 in Maseru last week and they have now qualified for the continental competition which is scheduled be played in Ghana from November.
“We just came out here and played our own game. We were not as clinical back in Lesotho as we were today (Sunday). We just had to redeem ourselves as a team because we know how good we are and how well we can play. We encouraged ourselves and spoke about relaxing in front of goals and getting our confidence back,” said the striker, who was named the Diski Queen-of-the-Match for her fine display which saw her score twice.
“It was great playing in front of such a huge crowd – thanks to the people in Bloemfontein.
“We wanted to reward them for coming out and we tried to bang in as many goals as we could. And I’m grateful to my team-mates, I couldn’t have done what I did today without them.”
With the Afcon spot booked, Seoposenwe says the team aims to qualify for the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup in France.
“We are looking forward to our ultimate goal which is to qualify for the World Cup. We had to start well today, getting our confidence back and playing as a team. As soon we did that, the goals started coming and the game was very fluent. We had total control for almost the entire game. It was a great performance, from the goalkeeper to the strikers.”
The top three teams at the women’s Afcon will qualify for the World Cup.
