Tasty World Cup fare

-

Mexico supporters at the World Cup should take inspiration from popular British celebrity chef Rick Stein in his latest travel cooking series Rick Stein’s Road to Mexico – starting on BBC Lifestyle (DStv channel 174) from July 4 (9pm).

It sees him retrace his steps on a journey he took in the 1960s from San Francisco to the south of Mexico, exploring the vibrant, tantalising foods and drinks from the region.

To get your guests shouting “ole!” when the team play South Korea on Saturday, go all out with a Mexican-themed fiesta that includes pinatas, sombreros, bright colours and lots of spice!

Focus on foods with easy-toshare treats that can be enjoyed in front of the TV. For Mexican delights create your own taco station with a variety of tasty fillers. Try Stein’s fish tacos or chicken burritos (recipe below) or follow the link. Oh, and don’t forget the tequila!

Germany lost to Mexico in their opening game of the World Cup, but will still have many supporters. They can add culinary influence to World Cup parties with sauerkraut, an array of sausages and mustards paired with crisp German beers when they play Sweden on Saturday.

Set the mood – incorporate popular elements in the decor. Think flags, inflatable cactuses, floating pinatas, giant pretzels or foamy beer cutouts to use as photo props. The sky is the limit!

A festive dress code – set the mood by asking guests to pick a team and dress accordingly. If you’re a Mexico fan, a stick-on moustache, sombrero and poncho should do the trick.

Germany supporters can wear a Tyrolean hat (that’s the bowler type style with the feather stuck into the band) along with lederhosen and long socks.

Games – decide and agree on the games and rules before the match starts.

Whether it’s a friendly wager against the opposing team or agreeing to take a sip every time your team goes offside, a fun activity is a great addition to any party. – Citizen reporter
