Luc ‘right fit for Chiefs’

MAHLANGU: FORMER STAR POINTS TO THE WAY EYMAEL TURNED THINGS AROUND AT FS STARS

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

Belgian coach tipped to take over vacant position.

With Luc Eymael yesterday confirming that Kaizer Chiefs have made him an offer, former Amakhosi star Jabu Mahlangu believes the Belgian could be just what the Naturenabased side needs right now.

The Amakhosi management have been harassed by supporters who want to know what changes the team are making ahead of the new season having endured three trophyless seasons under former mentor Steve Komphela.

Komphela resigned after fans rioted following a Nedbank Cup semifinal exit at the hands of Eymael’s Free State Stars in Durban last season.

Mahlangu told Phakaaathi that with Eymael having been in the country for over two years, he would be the best candidate as he will not need a lot of time to adapt and get to know the club and its players.

“He has been here for a while now and should know some of the players in the team and those he would want to bring on board,” said the Mahlangu, who was a firm crowd favourite during his heyday in the early 2000s.

Mahlangu said the way Eymael turned things around at Free State Stars paints a picture of a coach who works on players’ confidence which he believes is lacking in some of the players at Chiefs.

“Chiefs have been recently accused of signing average players who fail to carry the team when needed. It is partly true because some of them are just not the quality you would expect at such a big team but there are a few who can be big players with the right kind of coaching,” he said.

Eymael was quoted on Goal. com yesterday saying he would listen to Amakhosi’s overtures until the end of this week and if noth- ing comes of it he will go back to Ea Lla Koto.

There are other coaches Amakhosi are said to be considering for the job and Mahlangu said whoever is handed the job will have a massive task on their hands, especially if they are new to the local game.

“They will obviously need time to get the feel of things but he will also have to be able to adapt quickly so it has to be someone with experience. I don’t think the fans will take not winning a trophy for any longer than they have already waited,” added.
