Komphela entrusted to rebuild Celtic

Embattled Bloemfontein Celtic are expected to officially unveil Steve Komphela (left) as their new coach today, with the former Amakhosi mentor agreeing on a twoyear deal with the Free State side. Komphela was introduced to the players yesterday afternoon.

“Yes we have acquired him as our coach. He is on his way to meet with the players as we speak,” said Celtic spokesman Sello Nduna yesterday morning. “The team are starting their pre-season programme today and he will be introduced to them.

“We agreed on a two-year deal but we have an option of extending for a further year. We will do an official unveiling in the next few days.”

Komphela endured a rough three years at Kaizer Chiefs and had to resign following an ugly riot by the supporters, who burnt and destroyed equipment at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban following a 2-0 defeat to Free State Stars in a Nedbank Cup semifinal.

He will, however, be looking to rebuild himself at Celtic where there is likely to be less pressure for silverware. Amakhosi are yet to replace Komphela.

Phunya Sele Sele’s coach Veselin Jelusic resigned amid allegations that he had not been paid his full salary for a while.

Celtic have reportedly been in a financial crisis for the past few years and there were rumours this month that owner Max Tshabalala had sold the club.
