Name change, re-location

The Premier Soccer League confirmed yesterday they have approved a request from Platinum Stars’ owners to relocate the club from the North West Province to the Western Cape, and rename it Cape Umoya United.

The club will play in the National First Division next season after being relegated from the Absa Premiership. Dikwena finished bottom at the end of the season, and even though Ajax Cape Town were then deducted points and automatically relegated in their place, Stars also blew a second chance to stay up in the play-offs.

Stars confirmed yesterday that club owner Roger de Sa (above) would continue as coach at Umoya next season.

“Yes he will,” Stars communications manager Tebogo Mochadibane told The Citizen.

Mochadibane added that not all of the Stars squad would be relocating to the Western Cape.

Stars, meanwhile, were not specific about whether they would be moving to Cape Town or another part of the province.

“Let’s just say to the Western Cape,” added Mochadibane.

De Sa announced in February that he was part of a four-man consortium that had bought Platinum Stars from Royal Bafokeng Holdings for R22.5 million.

Royal Bafokeng Holdings renamed the club Platinum Stars in 2007, when they bought a 51% share in Silver Stars.
