Bernie going places

- Ken Nicol

Racing has been moved to Kenilworth today, due to parts of the Durbanville track being waterlogged, with more than 80mm of rain falling since Saturday morning.

The weather had cleared with a fresh wind blowing in Cape Town yesterday afternoon, but the going is still sure to be heavy.

After an impressive victory in his first run after gelding, the talented Bernie will take all the beating despite joint top weight in Race 6, a MR 90 Handicap over 1600m.

He handles soft going, has Bass-Robinson stable jockey Aldo Domeyer up and looks ready to go over 1600m again.

Three-year-old Hemmingway makes most appeal of the balance, followed by Shall Be Free and New Caledonia.

The best on the nose punt of the day though comes up in Race 5, a Maiden Plate over the same distance.

Brett Crawford’s Black Sail only went down 0.5 lengths to Seattle Kid second time out, and the older maidens he meets are well-tried. The main threat appears to be in the juvenile ranks. Potawatomi has had two close up seconds in his last three races while Sacred Night made big improvement second time out on soft going when staying on over 1400m. This distance will be even better, and he has the benefit of pole position draw, and a top class jockey in Grant van Niekerk.

An Eachway value bet which has appeal is Sailor Sam in Race 1. He has raced in features in his last two runs and shown great pace before fading in both, over 1200m.
