History takes centre stage

PRE-1970: TWO RACES AT AMTEC MIDVAAL FOR OLD SALOON CARS

Most exciting competitio­n at meet may be in the Formula Vee category.

The Amtec Midvaal circuit near Meyerton will host both the 2018 Historic Tour and Inland title chases this Saturday. Top billing belongs to the Pre1970 Historic Saloon Car brigade.

Contenders in the two races should include Colin Ellison (Ford Fairlane), Frank Davis (Ford Escort Mk 1), Jannie van Rooyen (VW Scirocco), Deon van Vuuren (Mazda Rotary), Gerhard Henning (VW Scirocco), Johann Smith (Mazda Capella), Miguel Ribiero (Alfa GTV) and Mike O’Sullivan (BMW 2002ti).

Equally exciting should be the Motul Modified Production Car races, with frontrunne­rs expected to be Keegan Pottas (EV Dynamics Honda CRX), Dirk Lawrence (Vaal Tmbers honda Ballade), Ismael Peck (Honda CRX), Shane Kroon (VW Golf Turbo), George Economides (VW Golf Turbo), Roan Ehlers ((FEC Polo), Paul van Niekerk (EV Dynamics Golf) and overall title leader Franco di Matteo in his Deltec Batteries Ford Laser.

Top contenders in the Midvaal Historics races should be Seef Rourie (Datsun 160U), Brendon Parker (Datsun), Franz Jensen (Datsun), Andries Draper (Ford Escort), Jackie Morrison (Ford Escort), Travis Jensen (Datsun), Johan Coetzer (Datsun), Johan Swanepoel (Alfa GTV), Eugene Gouws (Fiat 131) and Shawn Schmidt (Datsun).

The day’s closest racing should be provided by the Hankook Formula Vee category, with frontrunne­rs expected to be Jaco Schriks (Bean Child Rhema), Peter Hills (Lube Fusion Rhema), Gert van den Berg (BP Nantes Rhema), Lushen Ramchander (TRA Forza), Siyabonga Mankonkwan­a (Cervinia Forza), Brandon Hills (Lube Fusion Rhema) and Fred Rugheimer (Rhema).

Equally tight competitio­n can be expected in the Liqui Moly Inex Legend races, with podium chasers to include Richard van Heerde, Gerhard and Charl Roux, Justin Robertson, Johan van der Venter, Jason Loosemore, Richard Upton, Ian Upton, Chris Hoy and Steven Levine, plus brothers Giles and Sean Moore.

The Pre-1966 Legend Saloon Car races will see top contenders such as Jonathan du Toit (TAR Alfa Romeo), Vic Campher (Tom Campher Volvo 122S), Alan Poulter (Tom Campher Volvo 122S), Marc Miller (BMW), Mark du Toit (TAR Alfa Romeo), Gavin Holt (HRSA Youth MG), Ishmael Baloyi (TAR Alfa Romeo), Chris Carlisle-Kitz (Twinga Ford Anglia) and Chris Visagie (Ford Anglia) in action.

Multi-talented youngster Jeffrey Kruger (Universal Health Lotus)

must be the man to beat in the Lotus Challenge races.

His closest adversarie­s should include Thomas Falkiner (Adaptive Resource Taylon), David Coetzee (Adlem Auto Lotus), Richard Beningfiel­d (General Energy Caterham), Clive Wilmot (Lothario), Mackie Adlem (Rocam) and Fred Alberts (Birkin).

The Formula Libre races should see Louis van der Merwe (Witbank VW Formula Gti), Mac Odendaal (CRS Auto DAW), John Maurien (Life Style Galaxie Ray), Karen Geldenhuys (Abacus Suzuki) and Austin Zumgu (Suzuki) fighting it out.

Tackling the Pre-1990 Sports Car races will be drivers like Ricard Schubart (RG Motorsport Porsche), Larry Wilford (Lola T70), Kola de Klerk (Nissan 240Z), and Stefan Snyders (Spear Porsche 911).

Rounding out events will be two handicap races for Charlies Superspar Pursuit cars.
