Amajita have work to do

- Tshepo Ntsoelengoe

Amajita coach Thabo Senong was happy with the performance of his players following an exhilarating 3-3 draw with Zambia at Nkoloma Stadium in a friendly on Sunday, but says there are still things they need to work on ahead of their 2019 Under-20 Afcon qualifying match with Malawi this weekend.

Sibusiso Mbiliso, Wiseman Meyiwa and Lyle Foster were on the scoresheet, while King Kangwa, Martin Njobvu and Fransisco Mwepu scored for the home side.

“It was a good match, obviously we played tough opposition. We started this match with a view of finding out some information about some of our players, their physical level and team chemistry. We saw some positives, but there are some areas we need to work on.

“Overall I’m happy with the performance. We only had one training session ahead of this game, while Zambia have been in camp for three weeks. I can say there is a lot of potential in our team,” said Senong.

“We work on the mental strength of our players and the attitude. It’s all about concentrating for 90 minutes.”

Prior to this tie, Senong said his charges haven’t been active since it’s been off-season, but maintained that they have to be ready for Malawi at the Moruleng Stadium on Sunday.

“The challenge has been the off-season. We are well aware that most of our boys haven’t been playing regular football. We want them fit for the Afcon U-20 qualifier. And that is why we decided to organise this friendly,” the Amajita coach added.

“We are happy with the fact that some of our boys are at an advanced training phase with their respective clubs. That’s very crucial for the development of any player. However, we also stressed that success must always go hand in hand with humility. That’s key.”

The team returned from Zambia yesterday and will continue with their preparations for the Malawi clash throughout the week.
