The Citizen (Gauteng)

Real heroes are humble, dedicated

-

The refreshing angle of the Fifa Word Cup and Wimbledon has been that success does not depend on big names, huge egos or theatrics, but on dedication, teamwork and humility.

France also illustrated the value of inclusivity and globalism – together we are stronger.

In the world of politics, leaders like Angela Merkel represent the spirit conveyed by these two events that inspired the entire world: no theatrics.

In the political world, we also have the show-offs: people who focus on their hair and how they present themselves, those with huge egos, serving themselves rather than others.

The world increasingly sees through these characters and their “look at me” styles, both in sport and politics, and rejects them. There is no place for such superficialities in a modern and enlightened world.

I applaud the real heroes of the World Cup and Wimbledon – their success echoes far beyond the sporting arena.

May the example set by sport also filter through to the political arena and other spheres of society. Dawie Jacobs, Sterrewag
