United building for campaign

- Jonty Mark

Maritzburg United continue to build their squad ahead of the new season, yesterday announcing the signing of 33-year-old defender Nazeer Allie.

Allie was a free agent after leaving Bidvest Wits at the end of his contract, and should improve the United back four next season, if the fullback can stay fit, after having his share of injury problems at the Clever Boys.

Fadlu Davids (above) had already added young defender Denwin Farmer and midfielder Keagan Buchanan to his squad.

For now, meanwhile, United have also stayed true to their vow to keep stars from last season Siphesihle Ndlovu and Lebogang Maboe at the club, though interest in that pair may well persist until the end of the transfer window.

United are camping in Potchefstroom ahead of the start of the new Absa Premiership campaign, due to start on August 4, as long as Ajax Cape Town are unsuccessful in a court bid to interdict the start of the season.

“We go to Potchefstroom to be able to effect the final phase of our pre-season,” Davids said, in a video posted by United on Twitter.

“We play a couple of friendly matches over there and it is more about getting the players together, getting them to understand what the club is about, what our playing style is about and building that team spirit – that was our main strength last season.”
