Rebel’s Champ weighted to score

Trainer Paul Peter has Rebel’s Champ in top form currently and this three-year-old son of Rebel King is expected to notch up his third win in four starts at Turffontein on Sunday.

Rebel’s Champ lines up in Race 5, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1000m on the Standside track, and he is joint best handicapped runner along with Wrecking Ball.

In his last three starts Rebel’s Champ has won a MR 80 Handicap over 1000m on the Vaal Classic track and last time raced away from the field to win a MR 88 Handicap over this course and distance by four lengths, carrying 64kg. Sandwiched between them was the Grade 1 Computaform Sprint in which Peter’s charge could only finish 4.45 lengths behind Attenborough. However, as they met at level weights and that put Rebel’s Champ around 8kg under sufferance, it was not a bad effort.

Craig Zackey takes the ride this time but that is of little concern as he has ridden this gelding on a previous occasion and that was when he won his maiden in April last year.

Wrecking Ball is in a similar position as she has been running against stronger and comes back in class. Grant Maroun’s charge is lightning fast and will love the speedy going at the moment. Last time the four-year-old filly ran over 1160m but all six of her wins are over this trip and she looks the capable of pacing it out with Rebel’s Champ.

She has Luke Ferraris in the irons and this talented youngster takes a further 2.5kg off her back.

Angel’s Power showed improvement last time and with Piere Strydom up she needs to be included in the Pick 6 and Jackpot. With Isphan also in the field there is likely to be an abundance of speed and if they cut one another’s throats, Angel’s Power could fly up and steal the victory.
