Botha retires, starts new life as a trainer

- Ken Nicol

Popular Cape jockey Piet Botha made a dream exit from race riding in the final event at Kenilworth on Saturday when Jay Rock made all at longish odds.

The Jay Peg gelding is trained by Glen Puller, in whose stable Piet has been heavily involved since making a comeback in April last year, so it was fitting the pair should team up for one final triumph.

“Jay Rock was also my first winner after returning, so he has begun and ended my second racing career,” he said with a smile.

Piet entered the academy in 1992 and is still a mere 41 years old. But he suffered nerve damage after a heavy fall riding work at Summerveld in 2010, which led to his first retirement.

At first all seemed fine when he returned, but the problem has gradually resurfaced.

“I have a lot of pain on my left side, and my body is very sore after races.

“I love riding, and am sad to stop, but I can’t reach the levels I know I am capable of anymore, so it’s time to go,” he added.

But when one door closes another opens, and Piet begins his new career as a trainer tomorrow.

“The original plan was that I was going to take over from Glen, but he has now decided to carry on training. Since I had already signed for boxes at Milnerton I decided to go ahead anyway.

“I am starting with a mere nine horses, all of which are unraced juveniles, so it will be a while before you see my name in the racecard,” he concluded.
