List of injured jockeys because of falls continues to grow

-

Up-and-coming apprentice Luke Ferraris become the third jockey injured at the weekend when Sean Tarry-trained gelding Changing Seasons bolted with him aboard and barged through a railing before the running of the fourth race at Scottsville on Sunday.

Ferraris was taken to hospital for X-rays on a painful hip. The well-backed horse was scratched from the race and Ferraris stood down for the rest of the meeting.

Yesterday at Flamingo Park in Kimberley Evert Pheiffer was also taken off his remaining rides for the day when his mount, favourite Sazerac, came down just after the start of Race 6.

On Saturday at Turffontein apprentice Kabelo Matsunyane and jockey Wesley Marwing were both rushed to hospital after an accident before Race 3.

Matsunyane was diagnosed with concussion and will miss a couple of weeks of racing, while Marwing suffered bruising to the base of the spine.

Their mounts, both long shots, were also scratched.

At this stage the list of other jockeys out with injuries include Anthony Delpech, Gavin Lerena, Gunter Wrogemann and South Africa’s new Champion Jockey, apprentice Lyle Hewitson. He is expected to be out of action until the middle of September and he is hoping to be 100% fit in time to lead the South African team in Singapore at the Premier Gateway International Jockeys Challenge hosted by the Singapore Turf Club on 25 September.
