Komphela holds Chiefs to a draw

CELTIC CAME FROM 2-0 DOWN

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

Steve Komphela’s return to his former hunting ground at FNB Stadium ended in a result that was familiar during his reign as Kaizer Chiefs coach – he guided his new charges Bloemfontein Celtic to a 2-2 draw. It is, however, a point Komphela will cherish as his side had to fight for it coming from 2-0 down.

Chiefs will only have themselves to blame after letting slip when they could have wrapped it up and registered their first Absa Premiership win. Amakhosi led 1-0 at half time but they could have easily gone into the break with a bigger lead.

Dumisani Zuma could have opened the scoring as early as the eighth minute when he was set through on goal but a Celtic defender jumped in front of him and deflected his shot and the keeper collected comfortably.

Nine minutes later, Zuma was again menacing and managed to evade his former team’s defenders but his first touch let him down and sent his shot wide with his weaker left foot.

The diminutive attacker was just unlucky in the 26th minute as he did everything right but his ball hit the crossbar with Patrick Tignyemb not knowing where the ball had gone.

It is worth mentioning that Celtic also gave as much as they took and could have also got a goal or two in the first half.

Tshegofatso Mabasa will feel he let himself down when he could have netted what would have been one of the easiest goals but misdirected his effort wide with the Amakhosi goals wide open 27 minutes into the match.

It was Khama Billiat who opened the scoring as he beat Tignyemb with a cool finish in the 37th minute.

Both could have scored a few more but it was 1-0 at half time.

Komphela made a few changes at the start of the second half looking stabilise his team but it didn’t help much as Amakhosi continued pinning them back. Their efforts were rewarded 20 minutes into the half when Khotso Malope netted the second.

Celtic turned the tables on Amakhosi in a space of three minutes as they launched a comeback when they looked to be finished.

Second half substitute Menzi Masuku started the comeback when he halved the score line in the 75th minute with a brilliant finish. Then Ndumiso Mabena levelled matters three minutes later with a well taken shot.

Siphelele Ntshangase could have wrapped the match up a minute to full time but opted to try and find a team mate when he could have gone for goal.

Elsewhere, Bidvest Wits were rampant as they beat AmaZulu 3-0 with Gift Motupa, Mxolisi Macuphu and Simon Murray the scorers at Bidvest Stadium in Milpark.
